Health IQ Overview
Have you recently caught a Health IQ radio ad or maybe saw a Health IQ advertisement while scrolling through your Facebook or Instagram feed? Wondering if they can really be the best life insurance company for you, your family, and your quality of life?
Well, Health IQ is not an actual life insurance company. Like Top Quote Life Insurance, they are an online insurance agency with a primary focus on helping online shoppers find and apply for affordable life insurance coverage.
However, Health IQ can potentially offer something a little different than most of the other online agencies cannot, and that’s the potential for discounts.
Health IQ insurance has a unique niche in that they aren’t looking for just anyone to sign up through them – they’re looking for individuals who are dedicated to making healthy lifestyle choices.
While many traditional insurance companies penalize you for poor health and reward you with good health, Health IQ focuses on rewarding you for your good health and the activities you participate in to achieve your good health.
With Health IQ insurance, the better your health and lifestyle are, the better your life insurance rates will be.

History of Health IQ Life Insurance
Health IQ is the creation of an Indian-American entrepreneur from California named Munjal Shah and his co-founder, Gaurav Suri.
Shah, a highly successful businessman who has built several startup companies into companies producing millions in revenue.
In 2010 he even sold one of his companies (Like.com) to Google for an undisclosed amount of money. Many believe the sale of the company was well over $100 million, setting Mr. Shah up for life. But just when life was at its best, he was given a serious warning.
It was during a 10K race that something went wrong, and Shah was admitted to the ER with severe chest pain. He was 37-years old. With the knowledge that his father had his first heart attack at the age of 45, Shah determined to change his health.
He took small steps and eventually changed his diet, began to exercise regularly, and dropped 40 lbs over a few years. It was during his health transformation that the idea for Health IQ began to form.
Basing his company on the concept that people should be rewarded for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, he went in search of funding. Investors quickly caught onto the vision, and Shah secured $35 million in funding to begin.
Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Shah opened doors for business in 2013. To date, Health IQ has helped connect healthy individuals with life insurance companies, issuing a total of $29 billion in life insurance coverage.
To qualify for Health IQ’s top-tier rates, you have to take the Health IQ Quiz. The Health IQ Quiz is not your ordinary question and answer test. This exam was created by a team of health-conscious experts, including dieticians, endurance athletes, Olympians, and award-winning nutrition writers.
It includes a selection of more than 30,000 questions covering health concepts that only healthy people with active lifestyles will know. Over 10.2 million people have taken the Health IQ Quiz.
Health IQ Reviews and Ratings
A company’s ratings will tell you a lot about the state of the company itself, and Health IQ is in no shortage of ratings. Rest assured, you can find Health IQ on some of the most extensive review sites such as The Better Business Bureau (BBB), Trust Pilot, and Google.
Keep in mind, Health IQ is a life insurance broker, not a life insurance company. The insurance broker’s job is to help assist you in finding and applying for life insurance from the actual life insurance company.
Due to this distinction, you won’t find an AM Best rating for this company as those ratings are only awarded to the actual life insurance companies providing the death benefit protection.
Across all three review sites, they have been given several positive feedback. Health IQ insurance reviews are generally positive. Most negative comments are followed up by Health IQ representatives seeking to fix any issues encountered.
Health IQ has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau, known as the BBB, since September 2016, just shortly after opening. The entire time they’ve had an A+ rating. One recorded dispute was settled agreeably, though several negative reviews are waiting to be addressed.
Several of the 1-Star reviews on the BBB website appear to be from people who have experienced an aggressive sales approach by being called or emailed for months after inquiring about a quote.
When it comes to the highly respected site, Trust Pilot, they’ve received over 350 reviews and top out at a 4.7 out of 5-star rating. A whopping 96% of all reviews are in the “great” or “excellent” category. Only a small percentage of reviews fall within the poor to bad sections.
The small percentage of reviews that fell within the negative section tended to revolve around not qualifying for the initial rates originally quoted, lack of communication, and, once again, an aggressive sales approach.
On Google reviews, their score averages a 3.8 with over 150 reviews. While the overwhelming amount of reviews are in the positive, several negative reviews deal with the long underwriting process, quote changes, and can you guess what the third common complaint was?
Too many phone calls and emails! One Google reviewer states she was called 4x in one single day concerning her quote inquiry.
The majority of positive reviews are happy enough with their experience that they would recommend the company to friends. The negative reviews could point to the fact that Health IQ has some issues they need to work out within their system and, most importantly, knowing when to stop emailing and calling people.
How does getting a Health IQ life insurance quote work?
Getting a Health IQ life insurance quote works a bit differently than most online life insurance brokers. Typically, when you visit a website such as Top Quote Life Insurance, getting a quote is quick and fast.
Within 2-minutes of entering a few basic pieces of information about yourself, life insurance rates will display from multiple life insurance companies.
In addition to comparing rates, you will also have the option to apply for coverage without having to speak to an agent if you choose to do it on your own.
The Health IQ process is not nearly this simple.
The Health IQ Quote Process – Beware No Upfront Quotes
If you’re just simply browsing for life insurance rates, be prepared to be disappointed. Health IQ does not disclose any rates without talking to an agent as we went through the entire process for you.
While there are quote buttons located throughout the website, they only are used to collect data about yourself so that Health IQ has information on you when and if you decide to speak with one of their representatives.
The first step in the “quote process” is answering basic information such as your age, gender, height, and weight. You will need to also select what your annual income is from a range of numbers. Most online quote tools do not ask this.
We think Health IQ is asking for this information so they can provide you with their recommendation on how much coverage you should consider based on your income. A life insurance needs calculator can also help you determine the amount as well.
The last few steps are relatively common quote questions such as your contact information, how you heard of Health IQ, and your home address. Asking for your home address is a little out of the normal when most online quote tools only need the state you live in. This is because not all life insurance products will be available in every state.
After the personal questions have been answered you will need to answer three final questions that all pertain to the eligibility of three potential discounts Health IQ might be able to offer you.
#1. Would you take a 10-minute quiz in the next 30 days to save on life insurance?
After you have finished answering the personal information questions, you’ll be asked if you would like to take a 10-minute quiz in the next 30 days to save on life insurance. At this point, you can choose yes or no, but beware you are going to most likely end up having to take it anyway, especially if you are interested in the potential discount.
#2. Would you be willing to provide proof of your exercise to get even greater savings?
The next question will ask if you would be willing to provide proof of exercise to get even greater savings. Again you have the option to select yes or no. Regardless of what you choose, the next and final step will be the same for everyone.
#3. Would you like to see if you qualify for volume discounts?
The final question will provide the Health IQ representative with an amount of coverage you are seeking. It’s noted that the higher the amount of coverage that is needed could result in higher savings.
- $500,000 or less of coverage
- $500,000 – 1.55MM coverage – up to 26% savings
- $1.5-3MM coverage – up to 30% savings
Once you have answered the final three remaining “discount questions,” a pop-up will appear that you have matching companies for the basic rates, but Health IQ will need additional information to see if you qualify for the discounted rates.
NOTE: Even though you qualify for “basic rates,” Health IQ will not disclose what they are and who the companies are offering the basic rates.
At this point you will have the two options:
- Wait for a Heath IQ representative to call you to discuss your insurance needs
- Or while you wait for your call, take a preliminary Health IQ Quiz and prove your health literacy for a potential (8% discount)

What is the Health IQ Quiz?
What is the Health IQ Quiz?
The Health IQ Quiz is the first of the three potential discounts that you may qualify for with Health IQ. The quiz starts off by having you register for a Health IQ account, which will keep track of your quiz score.
After registering for an account, you will be taken to a section of the website that requires you to submit a significant amount of information about yourself. There is a note at the top of the screen that reads that the information will be used to help tailor a quiz to you.
However, based on our own knowledge of quoting thousands of online insurance shoppers, it appears that the questions would more likely be used to help assist in providing an accurate quote when you actually do speak with a Health IQ agent.
Here is the information you will need to provide:
- Height & Weight
- Tobacco use in the last 3-years
- If you’re on any special diet such as intermittent fasting, low-carb, alcohol-free, etc.
- What types of primary exercise you participate in more than once a week
- Any medical conditions with heart or blood pressure
- Mental health treatment
- Asthma or Sleep apnea treatment
- Muscle and bone issues such as Rheumatoid arthritis
- Treatment of any internal issues such as ulcers, liver, diabetes, lung, etc.
- History of cancer or AIDS, HIV or epilepsy
- Information about parents’ health
- Marital status
- Education
- Income
- DOB
- Zip Code
- Admission to a hospital in the last 5-years
- Hazardous Occupation
- Current life insurance coverage
After completing all of the above questions, you will be taken straight to a timed quiz. You will be given 30 random health and lifestyle-related questions with 60 seconds to answer each question.
In order to receive the 8% discount, you have to score an Elite Status. Some of the questions are quite easy, while others can be difficult.
We were not able to find out how many of the 30 questions could be answered incorrectly before being eliminated from an Elite Status score.
During our test, we missed a total of 5 of the 30 questions and were still able to score at the Elite Status level.
Here are a few examples of the Health IQ question you may see on your own quiz:
- In a low-carb diet, which of the following is the best alternative for lasagna noodles?
- Which of the following ingredients adds hidden calories to a healthy-seeming salad?
- Compared with regular sodas, diet sodas are linked to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome and to what other change?
- Which nutrient reduces the amount of glucose absorbed during digestion?
- Which of the following treatments has been shown to be effective in relieving patellofemoral pain?
What happens after taking the Health IQ Quiz?
After completing your 30 question Health IQ quiz you will be taken to your own personal dashboard, which will hold the results of your preliminary Health IQ Quiz. It will also have a current leader board containing the score of other Health IQ members.
Your personal Health IQ dashboard will provide the option to view several community tips similar to an online community forum where members can have discussions on specific health and fitness topics. You will also be able to climb the leaderboard by participating in additional Health IQ quizzes.
Currently, the Heath IQ database of quizzes contains over 30,000 different questions revolving around nutrition, exercise, and medical topics. Simply put, there is an endless supply of quizzes to be taken if you choose to.
Retail Rates vs Special Discount Rates
Shortly after filling out all the online questionnaire forms, registering for a Health IQ account and taking your quiz, you will be contacted by a Health IQ representative to discuss potential life insurance rates.
When you are contacted by a Health IQ representative, they should be able to pull your account up and view your responses to the health-related questions you answered earlier when initially setting up your account.
During your telephone call, your agent should be able to help answer any questions you have about their program. One obvious question that will surely be discussed is whether or not you will qualify for retail rates or their special discount rates.
Retail Rates
Health IQ works with 30+ insurance companies to help you get the best rate on your life insurance. When you request a quote, the insurance agency will shop your rates with all the companies that offer retail rates as well as the companies that they have partnered with to offer a special discounted rate.
On a side note, the retail rate is a term coined by Health IQ. It’s a clever way of grabbing customers’ attention into thinking that the retail rates might be much more than what the price is on the discounted rates.
Retail rates are exactly what every other insurance broker or agency uses to quote their clients. They are the standard norm that is set by each individual insurance company.
Health IQ is the only company that we are aware of that has been able to broker a deal with a small number of companies willing to offer a discount off their retail rates for qualifying applicants.
Health IQ Discount Rates
As mentioned, Health IQ has been able to partner with a select few insurance companies to offer a potential discount on life insurance premiums if the applicant is able to qualify based on their health knowledge and lifestyle activities.
From the information that we have been able to collect on Health IQ, we believe that their special rates partnerships are with the following life insurance companies:
- Ameritas
- Assurity
- Protective
- Savings Bank Life Insurance Company (SBLI)
The biggest benefit to Health IQ rates is the discounts they can score you based on your health literacy, active lifestyle, and health record. By the end of the underwriting process, you could potentially save up to 41% on your total life insurance. How does this work?
Health Literacy Discount: After taking the health literacy quiz, you’ll be qualified for a savings of 8%.
Active Lifestyle Discount: If you participate in lifestyle activities such as special diets, running, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, or yoga, you could qualify for a 9% savings. To be eligible for the discount, you will need to submit proof that you have participated in a competition or race, etc.
Underwriting Discount: Combined with your health literacy, an active lifestyle, Health IQ can provide an even greater discount to those with minor health concerns such as:
- Poor family health history
- High BMI
- High Cholesterol
- Low Resting Heart Rates
- High Blood Pressure
Through their partnerships, Health IQ is able to work with a few stretched underwriting guidelines to offset these potential insurance risks that could affect your rates.
This means you can earn potential credits towards your underwriting score in combination with your active lifestyle and health literacy. You can save up to 24% through underwriting credits.
Here’s a quick breakdown of potential savings on a 30-year life insurance policy, as shown on the Health IQ website.
Qualification Credits | Percentage Saved | Dollars Saved |
---|---|---|
Health Literacy Credit | 8% | $2,020 |
Active Lifestyle Credit | 9% | $2,270 |
Underwriting Credit | 0-24% | $2,020 – $6,279 |
Total Potential Savings: | 8-41% | $2,020 – $10,568 |
All told, if you meet every requirement during the Health IQ underwriting process, you can save up to $10,568 on your 30-year life insurance policy. As with any policy, the larger the death benefit, the larger the potential discount you can receive.

Who is Health IQ insurance best for?
Ideally, Health IQ insurance is for a semi-select group of people: those who consider themselves living an active and healthy lifestyle.
If you work 9-5 while sitting in a desk chair and go home to watch TV before you go to bed and hit repeat, Health IQ, your most likely not going to qualify for a discount.
You might be in good shape, but their discounts are not going to benefit you any. So, who is it for?
- Runners
- Swimmers
- HIIT Athletes
- Triathlon Runners
- Weightlifters
- Vegans
- Vegetarians
- Yoga lovers
- Cyclists
- Those Highly Dedicated to a Healthy Lifestyle
If you think you might not qualify because of a family health predisposition or an issue like Diabetes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Living a healthy lifestyle, according to Health IQ, also means managing Diabetes well, and taking care of yourself to avoid health complications that run in the family.
Health IQ understands that:
- Healthy living reduces the impact of your family’s health history.
- Well-managed Diabetes reduces the risk of health complications.
- Weightlifters have a higher BMI than is acceptable for most insurance companies.
- Cholesterol counts are not always accurate, and high HDL is a sign of healthy living.
- A low resting heart rate is a sign of good health.
- High blood pressure on the testing day could be due to stress or life circumstances.
Health IQ for Diabetics
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 34 million Americans have diabetes. 90-95% of that number are Americans who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
Getting affordable life insurance with type 2 diabetes is not impossible by any means. There are factors, however that are closely viewed when it comes to underwriting.
Primarily, underwriters will view the age of onset, how long you have been diagnosed, a1c history, and what steps you are taking to control your a1c.
The tricky part for someone who is shopping for life insurance with diabetes is knowing which companies are going to underwrite your medical condition favorably and who will offer the best rates.
If you have Type 2 Diabetes and you’re vigilant about keeping your levels low with exercise and quality nutrition, Health IQ is on your side. Through research, Health IQ has found out that those with Type 2 Diabetes who manage their A1C with a healthy lifestyle have:
- 40%-72% lower risk of mortality.
Based on this one statistic alone, if you fit Health IQ’s standards for actively maintaining healthy A1C levels, you could pay a lot less than you thought for your life insurance. You could save up to 38%, or $2,941 over a 15-year policy with its life insurance for a well-managed diabetes program.
Through Health IQ’s partnership with Protective Life, the well-managed diabetes program for type 2 diabetics can potentially lead to lower premiums than that of the standard health class rating.
Typically, most carriers at best will consider well-managed type 2 diabetics at standard rates. However, if you can meet the program guidelines, Health IQ may be able to do better.
Keep in mind you will be required to meet the following criteria to even be considered.
- Have an average a1c of 7.4 or lower
- Score an Elite on the Health IQ quiz
- Regularly participate in some type in some type of physical activity
Even if you meet the above criteria, you still have to be medically underwritten and approved by the life insurance company. It is not a guarantee that you will qualify for the potential discounts.
Health IQ Disability Insurance
Not only is Health IQ a life insurance broker, but they also contract with insurance companies for disability insurance, as well.
What is disability insurance? If you’re unable to work for a time due to an injury or illness, disability insurance kicks in and helps replace part of your monthly income.
Most places of employment only offer coverage for 90 days, making disability insurance a necessity if you experience a significant injury or illness that could cause you to be out of work for a half year or longer.
Just like life insurance through Health IQ, you’ll be able to score savings on disability insurance if. Why? because Health IQ has found out that people with healthy lifestyles:
- Have a 49% lower risk of becoming disabled.
- Have a 24% lower risk of missing more than 21 days of work.
In order to qualify, Health IQ will discuss and assess your overall health. You will be required to take a medical exam which is provided by the insurance company at no cost.
If you can score an Elite on the Health IQ quiz and pass the underwriting requirements, you may qualify for a 15% healthy lifestyle discount through their disability carrier Ameritas.

Health IQ Medicare Supplement
Health IQ realizes that living an active and healthy lifestyle doesn’t stop at any age, and seniors who are living a healthy lifestyle should be rewarded for it, too. Through research and study, Health IQ discovered that active seniors:
- Have a 36% less chance of early death.
- Have a 50% lower risk of heart disease.
- Have a 53% lower risk of stroke.
With special rates through Health IQ, seniors save up to 32% on their Medicare Supplement plan.
NOTE: The special rate discount is only offered to qualifying applicants who currently live in Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, and Oklahoma.
Do you have to use Health IQ to get a discount on life insurance rates?
Health IQ is a direct competitor of Top Quote Life Insurance. It is our duty to provide our customers with the most honest information so that they can make the best decision when it comes to purchasing insurance coverage.
With that said, as far as we know, Health IQ is one of two companies to somehow partner up with at least one more life insurance company actually to offer a discount on life insurance rates.
The second company that we know of is Costco.
Yes, Costco, the big wholesale retail warehouse chain has a deal with Protective Life where members can apply for term life insurance and receive a special member discount of 15%.
With Costco, the discount is applied to premiums only for the first 5 policy years.
After the 5th policy year rates will be the full price based on your qualified health classification and will remain the same price until the level period has ended.
Are the Health IQ discounts really worth it?
Who doesn’t love a discount, especially when it applies to your insurance premiums?
The question is, are they worth it? As mentioned, Health IQ can potentially offer a discount with a select few insurance companies.
The problem you may run into is whether or not the discount is large enough to beat the prices of a company not offering a discount, otherwise referred to as “retail rates”.
The small number of companies that are participating in Health IQ’s special discount rate are all excellent companies, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they also have the best rates.
If you qualify for health literacy and active lifestyle discounts, the total discount is 17%. The underwriting discount will only come into play if stretched underwriting is needed. If not, there would not be a need for an underwriting credit, which would result in no discount.
The health literacy discount also referred to as the Heath IQ Quiz, is one of the easier discounts to obtain. But at an 8% discount, we believe it will be hard beating the best price of a company offering retail rates.
Regardless of how many discounts you may qualify for, most importantly, have to qualify for the life insurance coverage by going through underwriting and possibly having to take an exam.
To answer the question if Health IQ discounts are really worth it, it just depends. Some people will benefit from it greatly, while for others, it will really have no effect as the retail rates may be the better option.
Pros and Cons of Health IQ
Health IQ is an insurance broker with a unique twist. Many people love the option of getting lower-priced coverage as a reward for their healthy lifestyle.
There are, however, some reasons why getting a life insurance policy through Health IQ might night be for everyone.
Here is our list of pros and cons for Health IQ:
Pro: Potential Savings Not Offered Elsewhere
Health IQ can score its applicants a serious discount of up to 41% on their life insurance policies. They are the only insurance broker known to have the ability to offer potential discounts on life insurance rates.
Pro: 76% Approved Preferred Plus
Health classifications are a large part of what makes up the final cost you will pay for your life insurance coverage. There are four main health classifications with Preferred Plus being the absolute best classification.
Health IQ states on their website that 76% of their exclusive rate clients get the top rate class of Preferred Plus while other insurance agencies average 35%.
QUICK FACT
In all fairness, Health IQ heavily markets their insurance to people who are healthy and very active. People who fit this description are going to have an excellent chance of qualifying for Preferred Plus regardless of who they apply with.
If the Health IQ business model did not revolve around marketing and offering insurance to the type of applicants they work with, we can bet that their high preferred plus percentage would be much lower.
Pro: Health IQ Blog
Health IQ wants its users to stay up to date and informed on the latest trends, news, and information in the health world. The Health IQ blog offers several helpful topics on insurance, health and the latest news with the company.
Here’s a quick look at some of their recent articles:
- The Benefits of Holistic Therapy
- Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors
- Using Social Media for Mental Health

- And more
PRO: You’re Part of a Community
When you enroll to take a Health IQ quiz you have the opportunity to set up your personal account and user dashboard.
Within your dashboard, you’ll have access to the Health IQ community where other members ask questions and post comments to multiple health and fitness subjects.
PRO: Health IQ App

You’ll have access to your personal account where you can compete in daily quizzes and earn potential rewards.
PRO: Works with Go365
Are you a Go365 member? If so, you’ll be happy to know that you can link your Go365 account with your Health IQ account. Completing daily quizzes can result in points towards your Go365 account.
Con: Selective Qualification
Due to Health IQ’s focus on the highly active and fit community, a vast amount of the population will not benefit from their discounts.
Unless you have an incredibly active lifestyle, you will do just as well or possibly better by receiving a retail quote through another life insurance broker instead.
Con: Painfully Long Quoting Process
When I first tested the Health IQ website, I thought I would be able to view possible life insurance rates. I was wrong. The quoting process gives the expectation that you’ll be able to review rates, but in all reality, it’s just a source to collect information about yourself.
We assume the information you provide in the online forms will ultimately be used to give you an accurate quote, but be prepared, you will need to speak with a representative. This can be a turnoff to many people who just want to view rates and have some time to think about it rather than being pressured into buying something on the spot.
That’s not to say that Health IQ will pressure you into buying but take a look at their online reviews. Most complaints from people who inquired about a quote stated that they had been called, texted, and emailed non-stop from the company.
Con: Really Benefits Athletes Only
Don’t run an 8-minute mile? Not an ironman or CrossFit athlete? That’s not necessarily a problem because Health IQ is contracted with multiple companies.
However, their program really only benefits certain criteria of people. Our question would be if you are an average healthy person or even someone with health problems, why go through their rigorous process?

Founded in 2013: Top Quote Life Insurance is a veteran-owned independent life insurance agency. We are contracted with over two dozen life insurance companies including all the ones offered by the above companies.
Term life insurance is only one of the many types of life insurance options that we specialize in. We also work in finding affordable life insurance coverage for all age groups as well as call classifications of health.
Final Thoughts on Health IQ
While Health IQ is the perfect life insurance company for a select community of athletes and highly active people, it certainly isn’t for everyone.
You may not have the time required to revolutionize your lifestyle before applying for life insurance. If this sounds like you, it might be best to seek the services of another life insurance broker.
At Top Quote Life Insurance, we compare life insurance policies across numerous companies to find you the best life insurance quote possible. We even offer all the same life insurance companies and Health IQ plus a few extras.
We don’t require any specific health or fitness goals and want to find you the best policy available. We welcome everyone to come and shop for their personal life insurance needs with us.
We specialize in the following types of policies including:
- Whole Life Insurance
- Term Life Insurance
- No Medical Life Insurance
- Universal Life Insurance
- Burial Insurance
- Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance
- Return of Premium Life Insurance
- Senior Life Insurance
With Top Quote, you can receive an initial quote in just minutes and start comparing companies right away. If this sounds more up your alley, take a few minutes and apply today.
