Height & Weight Guidelines
When it comes to underwriting overweight or obese life insurance coverage, the life insurance companies will underwrite you based on a set of height and weight guidelines.
Height and weight guidelines are set with a maximum allowable weight for each height for both males and females. Within those recommended guidelines are the life insurance health classifications that you may qualify for.
IMPORTANT:
There is not a universal height and weight guideline used by every life insurance company. Each life insurance company will underwrite you based on their own set of guidelines.

Qualifying Health Classifications & Being Considered Overweight
If you consider yourself overweight, most likely you’re still within the recommended guidelines for 1 of the 4 general health classifications of Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus or Standard.
IMPORTANT:
If you are 10-15 lbs over the height and weight guidelines for risk classification, there is a very good chance we can still get you approved without having to go to the next higher classification.
Qualifying Health Classifications & Being Considered Obese
If your build does not meet 1 of the 4 general health classifications you may qualify under the health classification of “substandard” or “table rated”. A substandard or table rated health classification is broken down into 8 table ratings that consist of either numbers 1-8 or letters A-H.
Each table rating is an additional 25% increase in the price of the standard health classification price. Just like qualifying for a general health classification, qualifying for a table rated policy will be based on the life insurance company’s height and weight guidelines.
EXAMPLE: If your weight does not qualify under general health classifications, you may qualify for a substandard or table rated policy. Each table rating is an additional 25% increase in the price of the standard health classification price.
Table 1 or A = 25%
Table 2 or B = 50%
Table 3 or C = 75%
Table 4 or D = 100%
Table 5 or E = 125%
Table 6 or F = 150%
Table 7 or G = 175%
Table 8 or H = 200%
IMPORTANT: Other health factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart conditions, or any other health-related health risks in combination of being obese can possibly lead to being declined for life insurance.
If you believe yourself to be obese and have health conditions you may want to consider guaranteed issue life insurance coverage. Before purchasing guaranteed issue life insurance coverage, we will check to see if you can qualify for traditional life insurance, as the premiums will be significantly cheaper.
Unisex Height & Weight Guidelines are a Benefit to Females
Majority of life insurance companies use guidelines for both males and females, however, there are some companies that use a unisex chart. A unisex chart can be beneficial for female applicants who are considered overweight.
Female weight standards are always lower than males. Unisex charts give females more leeway on their weight allowing them to possibly qualify for better rates.
If you’re a female that considers yourself to be overweight, consider the following companies as they use unisex charts Prudential, Banner & Voya.

Ages 60+ are More Lenient on Weight Guidelines
If you’re over the age of 60 most life insurance companies will underwrite you based on an entirely different height and weight chart. Some life insurance companies are more lenient the older you are, allowing you to qualify for affordable life insurance rates.
EXAMPLE:
- Male age 45 who is 6’0” max weight for Preferred is 228
- Male age 65 who is 6’0” max weight for Preferred is 258
Have you Recently Lost a lot of Weight?
If you have lost 10 or more lbs in the last year, then let me say that is awesome and keep it up! Losing weight is not easy but it can be rewarding for both your health and premiums.
Here is the problem though with losing weight and life insurance, if you have lost more than 10 lbs within the last year the life insurance company will underwrite you for only half of the total amount of weight loss.
The reason being, they want to make sure the weight loss is permanent. After 1 year’s time has passed, we simply apply for a rate reduction and show the life insurance company that the weight loss has remained for the better health classification.
- Half of total weight loss added onto height and weight chart if its only been less than 1 year
- No weight added back on to underwriting height & weight chart after 1 or more years of weight loss
IMPORTANT: If you have recently lost weight, but it hasn’t been a full year, don’t let it prevent you from applying now. Applying now will keep you at the lower rates based on your current age. If you wait a full year before applying, you will be applying at a higher rate based on being a year older.
