The life insurance company offering living benefits will specify the qualifications, but generally, the following must be met:
- Qualifying terminal illness with a 6-24 month life expectancy
- Qualifying chronic illness that leaves the insured unable to perform a specified number of activities of daily living (bathing, continence, dressing, eating, toileting and transferring)

Details: Cincinnati Life Insurance offers a free accelerated death benefit rider with any purchase of their Termsetter term life insurance policies.
The free-rider provides the option to accelerate up to 50% or $250,000 maximum of the policy death benefit with any qualifying terminal illness or confinement to a nursing home.
It should be noted that Cincinnati Life Insurance allows the acceleration of the death benefit if the insured is expected to die within 24 months. Most life insurance companies are for 12 months.
